About This Site
Get Camping and Backpacking covers the gear that decides whether a short trip outside is a good one: backpacking tents, self-inflating sleeping pads, synthetic sleeping bags, squeeze water filters and trekking poles. Every piece is used on real one- and two-night trips in the Uinta Mountains, the Wasatch and the Utah desert, and every review says what bugs us as plainly as what works.

Backcountry Safety
Camping and backpacking carry real risks, and no piece of gear removes them. Check the forecast and the fire restrictions before every trip, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back, and turn around when weather, daylight or your body says to.
A sleeping bag's temperature rating is a lab figure, not a promise of comfort. Hypothermia can set in well above freezing when you are wet, tired or windblown, so carry insulation and a dry layer beyond what you expect to need. Never run a stove, heater or any open flame inside a tent: tents burn quickly and fuel-burning devices can produce carbon monoxide in an enclosed space.
A portable water filter removes bacteria and protozoa but does not remove viruses or chemical contaminants. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use, backflushing and storage, never let a hollow-fiber filter freeze once it has been wet, and replace it if you suspect damage. Trekking poles help on uneven ground but do not prevent falls; check that locks are tight before each descent. If you have a heart, joint or other medical condition, talk with your doctor before taking on strenuous hiking or high elevation.
